Bread in the Georgian culture and religion has been treated carefuuly since the ancient times. Its name has always been mentioned reverently and it has been connected with love and values. The respect towards the bread is seen from the names as well (Shoti’s bread, Dedo’s bread, Deda’s bread); you can see one of the varieties of bread on the table of each Georgian family during any significant celebration. All sorts of Georgian bread have been baked in tone or bread oven, which was called ‘turne’ (an oven for bread baking, earthenware bread-baking dish). The most ancient tone in Georgia dates back to V-VII century. Baking of Georgian bread as well as a traditional method of sticking it inside the tone (bakery oven) can be studied at all branches of ‘Tsiskvili Group’.
